The Secrets to Fitting in Self-Care for Mums

Sometimes as parents, we tend to worry about looking after everyone in our family and unfortunately looking after ourselves doesn’t make the list. I believe making sure I incorporate self care practices in my life has really helped keep me grounded and stress at bay. Looking after yourself first, will allow you to take better care of your family. As a working Mum, I know it can be hard to find the time for this, so I’ve shared my secrets below on how I try to squeeze it in my life. Some easy self care practices to consider are; meditation, moving your body with whatever exercise you enjoy most, keeping a gratitude list or journal, sipping a herbal tea and getting enough sleep. My eBook also has more resources on self care practices.

1. Rise before everyone else does.
Simple for some, impossible for others! If this is possible for you, I really recommended setting an alarm even just half an hour before your children wake. This 30 minutes is then your un-interrupted self-care time to read a book, meditate, journal or even a home yoga session. Being able to take care of yourself first thing in the morning will allow you to feel grounded and centred throughout the day.

2. Schedule time for yourself.
As entrepreneur and philanthropist, Marie Forleo, likes to say ‘if it’s not scheduled – it’s not real’. We like to schedule a lot in our lives, and we manage to fit a lot in as busy mums! Why aren’t we scheduling in time for ourselves? If you see a free gap in your schedule this week, I encourage you to fill it with something for your own self care.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Women can take a lot of pressure on to do things themselves. We all do it, and we tend to do it unconsciously. What we need to get better at, is asking for help. If you really haven’t had anytime for yourself over the last few weeks, why not ask a friend or family member to take your children for a few hours? And then make sure you spend that time for yourself – not any errands!

4. Take the easy wins.
Self care doesn’t have to be a big deal. It doesn’t have to be a one-hour yoga class every single day or even week! You might steal five minutes to yourself to sit and have a cup of tea, or read your book while waiting in the car for your family. Steal moments when you can and make them into moments for you.

I really hope these tips help you fit more self care into your life. You can follow me on Instagram or Facebook for a look into my life as a Mum, entrepreneur and health advocate.
