Healthy Home-made Hamburgers (Gluten Free, Dairy Free and Paleo options)
I love hamburgers (especially when I am pregnant haha)- however I am not a fan of the greasy options you get from your local takeaway shop. I believe it is completely possible to recreate all of your favourite dishes using real foods. SO If you also love hamburgers but do not really known how to create a healthy version, here is the perfect solution for you.
P.S I have also included gluten, dairy free and paleo options at the bottom of this post to help you create the perfect burger to suit your needs!
What you need:
1 medium onion very finely chopped
4 cloves of crushed garlic
500grams grass-fed or organic beef mince
¼ cup of coconut flour
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
Grinded Himalayan pink salt and cracked pepper added to suit your tastes
6x Slices of cheese (1 for each of the 6 patties-optional)
Organic spelt bread loaf (I recommend Bills Organics which is available from both Coles and Woolworths if you do not make your own)
1 beetroot thinly sliced
1 carrot grated
Dijon mustard (preferably organic)
Tomato Sauce (preferably home-made or organic)
6 baby cos lettuce leaves
1 tomato sliced
What you need to do:
Preheat fan forced oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
Combine onion, garlic, mince, egg, coconut flour, Worcestershire sauce, basil, salt and pepper in a large bowl and mix with hands until evenly combined.
Shape mixture into 6 even meat patties. If you are not going to be using all 6 patties, they freeze really well so just place in a freezer bag and pop in the freezer to be defrosted for use on another day.
Place patties on a greased oven tray (I usually just use a small amount of coconut oil to ensure the patties do not stick to the tray)
Cook for 25-30 minutes until the patties are cooked then add the cheese (optional) and grill for a further 5 minutes.
While the cheese is melting, toast the bread (2 slices per person).
Then choose one of the slices of toast per serving, spread on condiments, add avocado, tomato, lettuce, carrot and top with meat patty and final piece of spelt toast.
Gluten free option: You can use gluten free toast or use 2 lettuce leaves to replace bread.
Dairy free option: Do not use the cheese but you can use cashew cheese which I created in this recipe.
Paleo option: You can use lettuce leaves as a substitute for bread or if you prefer you can use this paleo bread recipe.
